Category Complaints under Reg. (EC) 261/2004: long delay, cancellation and denied boarding

What are my rights if my flight has been canceled?

Flight cancellation occurs when an air carrier, which has initially scheduled a flight with at least one booked seat, fails to operate it.

If your flight has been cancelled, you are entitled to:

- Choose between a refund of the ticket price and rebooking on an alternative flight.
- Assistance, including meals, drinks, possible hotel accommodation based on the duration of the wait, airport transfers, and two telephone calls or messages via telex, fax, or email.
- Financial compensation, which varies depending on the route covered by the cancelled flight. However, this compensation is only applicable in specific cases.

Compensation is not applicable in the following scenarios:

- When passengers are informed of the flight cancellation:
- At least 14 days before the scheduled departure date.
- Between two weeks and seven days before the departure date, provided an alternative flight departing no more than two hours before the originally scheduled time and arriving at the final destination no later than four hours after the originally intended time.
- Less than seven days before the departure date, if an alternative flight is offered departing no more than one hour before the originally scheduled time and arriving at the final destination no later than two hours after the originally intended time.

- When the cancellation is due to exceptional circumstances beyond the air carrier's control, such as severe weather conditions or certain cases of strikes.
