What are my rights in the event of baggage damage?

In general, regulations governing compensation for damaged luggage stipulate the following.

For carry-on luggage:
Air carriers registered in countries adhering to the Montreal Convention are obligated to compensate passengers up to a maximum of 1000 Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) if cabin baggage is damaged, destroyed, or lost due to the air carrier's fault at the end of the flight.

Air carriers registered in countries adhering to the Warsaw Convention are required to compensate passengers up to a maximum of 332 SDRs.

For checked baggage:
EU air carriers and those from countries adhering to Montreal Convention are obliged to compensate passengers up to a maximum of 1000 SDRs if checked baggage is damaged, destroyed, or lost at the end of the flight, or if baggage delay results in incurring essential expenses.

Air carriers from countries adhering to Warsaw Convention must compensate passengers at a rate of 17 SDRs per kilogram of baggage weight, up to the maximum weight allowed for transportation in the hold without additional charges. These weight limits are determined by individual air carriers and are specified in the travel conditions (or General Conditions of Trasportation), which are typically outlined on the air ticket.

Compensation is only payable if the air carrier is found liable for the damage.
